If mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!

Ahhhh, yes...the importance of (new) moms self care...I address this topic in my childbirth education classes. Despite the fact that I primarily share this info with expectant Mamas, it is applicable to women with babies/children of any age.
Sooooooo, for all you new Mamas out there reading this:

The birth of your baby, and the time in the months following, is known for being a beautiful, transformative roller coaster ride. It is common to put the baby’s needs first. Biologically speaking, this is by design; they are so cute! It is easy to get swept up in the routine of anticipating their needs. But the bottom line is YOU NEED TO TAKE CARE OF YOU TOO!!  When you are grounded & emotionally balanced then you are able to show up more fully present with others (loved ones) as well as with yourself.  Remember the classic analogy of the instructions for the O2  mask on an airplane: “Place your mask on first before helping others.”

I really appreciate the NURSE program (Women’s Moods by Sichel & Driscoll). I go into a lot more detail when explaining this model in class, but here is it simplified:

~N-Nourishment & Needs
~U-Understanding
~R-Rest & Relaxation
~S-Spirituality
~E-Exercise

In addition to utilizing this program, I'd also like to suggest a few other helpful tips:

-Set realistic expectations for  yourself (less pressure & reduce guilt)
-Build a positive support system to combat isolation…and if anyone offers help say yes!
-Make time to connect to partner
          -Avoid comparing yourself to others
-Seek professional help if you are feeling down or anxious
-Treat yourself to the spa or seek out bodywork that speaks to you
-Prioritize what is important (ex: the dishes can wait!)
          -Be appreciative & express gratitude

THE BOTTOM LINE IS: YOU NEED TO TAKE CARE OF YOU!!

Remember: If Mama ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy!!!
